| 5 Tips to Look After Your Body |
| When it comes to preventing back pain or injury most of our Osteopathic patients have never had support about where to start. Here are some of the top 5 hacks our team of Osteopaths have put together for our patients in our clinic to help reduce pain, recover from injury and continue in their health transformation. These hacks can be used when starting new exercise routines, getting out in the garden or doing DIY and even perfect for our pregnant and postnatal patients. 1. Start with warm-up exercises Before diving into gardening tasks, get warmed up with shoulder roll movements, practice squat movements on and off a chair and go for a short walk to get your body warm and ready to move. 2. Use good techniques where possible. Think about these three things: ** breathing during movements: exhale on exertion can help reduce the pressure down through the body during lifting ** lifting by pushing off the ground instead of from hinging at the back back ** being mindful in prolonged bending or twisting motions 3. Take breaks and hydrate! Taking regular breaks to rest, grab a glass of water, stretch during or between activity sessions and prevent overexertion and muscle strain. 4. Check your footwear. We often demote our shoes to ‘garden shoes’, which means we have reduced stability around the ankles and feet. Be honest if they’re getting passed it before demoting them to a job that you are quite active. 5. Listen to your body and stop any activities that are uncomfortable or painful. Don’t forget to use heat or cold packs regularly to reduce pain or discomfort. We recommend two forms of cryotherapy (cold packs!) , we all experience different sensations when in pain and depending on our age, skin type and preference we offer two versions that are both effective for reducing inflammation locally and reducing pain long term. 1) 10-15 minutes at a time, repeating 3-4 times a day 2) 5 minutes on/5 minutes off for 30 minutes, repeating 3-4 times a day Still need help?
